Corris Mine Explorers is an activity and an attraction.
To enjoy this experience you must be mentally and physically well. You must be capable of walking at a steady pace throughout the visit, although there will be regular stops to examine and appreciate the surroundings. The walking distance varies with each trip, 1/4 mile for the Taster Trip, 1/2 mile for the Mine Explorer Trip and 2 miles plus for the Half Day Mine Expedition.
Before you enter the old slate mine, you will be equipped with a helmet, cap lamp, lamp belt and safety clips. For the Taster Trip you will be given a hand torch and helmet.
The exploration involves a walk through dark, damp tunnels. For most of your visit you will be able to walk upright. There are two optional sections on the Half Day Mine Expedition where you may need to crawl through an opening in the mine and climb up a section of slate – but this all adds to the fun. In these parts of the mine, you are always attached to safety ropes, using the safety clips provided.
The routes vary and the guide adjusts the visit to suit your capabilities and preferences. Anything which involves more than just walking through the mine workings is optional.
Toilets are available at the Corris Craft Centre before and after your trip but not underground.
